The UCSF Intrinsic Value of Art Series (IVAS) committee is delighted to announce our open call for the UCSF Zine Fair! We are looking for zines focused on the themes of identity, health, wellness, and the human experience. Selected applicants will be invited to showcase their work on Friday, June 9, 2023 at the UCSF Alumni House. Furthermore, artists will have the opportunity to exhibit and sell their works ranging from handmade zines to small-run publications.
The Bay Area has a long history of supporting radical print shops that produce art, political posters, pamphlets, handbills, and unique flyers. Small presses and DIY print media has played a vital role in disseminating community-driven information that centralizes the voices of people over institutions. Additionally, zines are vessels of public consciousness and a medium for activism, free speech, community storytelling, and creativity. To pay homage to zines as an imaginative art form and their impact on history, IVAS is hosting its first zine fair. The fair aims to highlight print-based work focusing on multi-disciplinary healing. The UCSF Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, through the UC Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI), are funding this event.
The fair is open to the UCSF community and members of the public. We strive to host an inclusive event where people of diverse genders, backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and identities are represented and feel safe to share their creativity. All are welcome and encouraged to join us in celebrating rich print art from Bay Area creators.
