The Makers Lab at UCSF

The Makers Lab is open by appointment for UCSF teaching, learning, and research projects. Contact us to schedule an appointment. We continue to offer 3D printing curbside service.

The Makers Lab provides hands-on access to technology, tools, and environments that foster interdisciplinary collaboration, curriculum integration, and research innovations. The Makers Lab invites everyone from across UCSF to unleash their natural creativity. Attend an event, reserve equipment, schedule a consultation, and start turning your idea into reality today!

Reserve equipment for your next idea

Innovate. De-stress.

The Makers Lab is a creative outlet for the UCSF community to explore new technologies, receive training and support, prevent burnout, and minimize stress. This helps to spark new solutions for both new and old challenges found in the health sciences through interprofessional collaboration.

Keep up with the maker movement at UCSF

Attend a pop-up to expand your skills, learn how to operate equipment, and connect with the UCSF community. Be prepared for hands-on activities, demos, best practices, and a lot of fun. Can’t make it to a scheduled pop-up? On-demand recordings are available. If you have an idea for a pop-up you would like to lead or suggest, contact the Makers Lab. Get inspired by reading published work from the Makers Lab. Please acknowledge the Makers Lab and Makers Lab staff in publications and contact us when your Makers Lab supported work is published.

The Makers Manifesto

Break the ice

Introduce yourself to other makers in the space. You never know who you'll meet and what you'll learn.

Care and share

Respect the space and each other. Refrain from eating in the lab and clean up after yourself. Report broken equipment or tools.

Fail (at least a little)

We’re here to create and experiment. Ask questions if you’re not sure how something works and take your time.

Boldly go where no one has gone before

Be innovative. Respect copyright, patent, and trademark law and refrain from making dangerous or illegal items.

The Makers Lab was such an important place of mindfulness and creativity for me during this year of medical school. I would not have made it through this year nearly as happily if it were not for you guys!
MD Candidate, School of Medicine
I am thankful to be at an institution that values creative exploration and innovation. The UCSF Makers Lab is an example of investment in expansive thinking, and it is a real pleasure to be part of our maker community.
MD Candidate, School of Medicine
The collaborative interaction with the Makers Lab is a great model for how groups with diverse skills and expertise can come together to identify and implement innovative solutions that benefit UCSF researchers, faculty, and patients.
UCSF Researcher

3D Printing for Research and Education

The UCSF Department of Anatomy and Makers Lab support the Advanced 3D Printing elective. This matches a UCSF student with a faculty or researcher to produce a 3D printed project for patient education, simulation, or research.

Make things happen

As we discover more applications for 3D printing across UCSF, the Makers Lab will need more materials to keep “making.” Join us, make a gift, and help us support the making community at UCSF.
