Charles Garfield founds Shanti Project to provide free volunteer counseling to people with life-threatening illnesses.

Robert Gallo isolates T-cell growth factor (interleukin-2), allowing T-cells to be cultured in vitro.
 
1978
San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk are assassinated; Dianne Feinstein becomes mayor.
 
1980
Gallo demonstrates that retroviruses (HTLV-I and HTLV-II) can infect humans.
