David Baltimore and Howard Temin independently discover reverse transcriptase, a marker for retroviruses. 1974
Charles Garfield founds Shanti Project to provide free volunteer counseling to people with life-threatening illnesses. 1976
Robert Gallo isolates T-cell growth factor (interleukin-2), allowing T-cells to be cultured in vitro. 1978
San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk are assassinated; Dianne Feinstein becomes mayor. 1980
